With
a special 10 event, 10th Anniversary season on the horizon, Kawartha
Speedway’s drivers, crews and officials bid a final fond farewell to the 2009
campaign Saturday, January 16th at the track’s annual award’s
banquet. A crowd of more than 300
assembled in the dining room under the enclosed grandstand for the presentation
of point fund money, trophies and special awards.
The
evening began with the top 10 in each of the track’s 3 weekly divisions being
recognized for their efforts during the season.
Mike Wallace, Kyle Donaldson and Dan McHattie earned championship
honours in the Discount Car and Truck Rental Mini Stock, Better Carpet Thunder
Car and NAPA Auto Parts Late Model classes respectively. Next on the agenda, it was time to reward the
freshman class of ’09, with rookie of the year awards presented to late model
driver Mike Sinopoli, first year thunder car pilot Chad Strawn and Cory Martin,
whose #11 mini stock was all but destroyed one week, only to find the way to
victory lane on the next night of action.
In
voting among their peers late model runner Tim Fernandes, thunder car veteran
Steve Mayhew and mini stock track champion Mike Wallace picked-up the most
sportsmanlike driver
awards. Cole
Powell, Dave Haywood and Hart Moroney earned the most improved driver spotlight
in the late model, thunder car and mini stock divisions.
To
close out the evening, the team of thunder car driver Willie Reyns was rewarded
with the Dedicated Pit Crew award. Late
model drivers Ryan Kimball and Mike Sinopoli each received a $500.00 gift
certificate from Five Star Racecar Bodies following a random draw. Kawartha Speedway also presented a special plaque
to Jennine Huffman for her efforts in preparing the track’s 2009 magazine.
The
final words of the night belonged to general manager/promoter Derek Lynch, who
took to the podium to thank the drivers in each division for their strong showing
during the season – and to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of his wife
Cait as the 2009 recipient of the President’s Award.
